Matthew Schaelling is a PhD candidate in economics at Brown University. He studies bias in standardized testing, applying contemporary text analysis methods to measure and understand gaps in reading comprehension exams across gender and race. His other research interests span urban economics and the economics of education, including topics such as housing regulation and teacher labor markets. He holds a BS in applied and computational mathematics from Brigham Young University. Previously, he was a predoctoral research fellow at Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.
